PICKLING AND PASSIVATION

We provide specialized chemical cleaning, pickling, and passivation services for hydraulic pipelines, lube oil pipelines, fuel pipelines, and water pipelines, crucial during precommissioning, installation, or when replacing old with new pipelines—either on-site or at our dedicated yard.

Chemical Cleaning, Pickling & Passivation Services

Why Are These Treatments Essential?

During pipeline construction and commissioning, internal surfaces accumulate contaminants:

  • Mill scale, rust, welding residues, grease, oils, and other debris.
  • These can accelerate corrosion, compromise system integrity, and introduce process contamination.
  • Professional chemical cleaning, pickling, and passivation eliminate these hazards, lengthen pipeline life, ensure safety, and maintain product purity.

Chemical Cleaning

Chemical cleaning removes organic and inorganic contaminants from the internal surfaces of pipelines using proprietary cleaning solutions. This process:

  • Targets oils, greases, protective coatings, dust, corrosion products, and biofilms.
  • Can be performed by fill-and-soak (static fill), or by fill-and-circulate (dynamic flushing), tailored to the system’s geometry and contamination levels.
  • Essential before pickling and passivation to maximize their effectiveness.

Pickling

Pickling involves treating the pipeline interior with acid (often HCl, nitric, or hydrofluoric), dissolving oxides, rust, and welding scale:

  • Removes oxide layers, metallic residues, and prepares metal for optimal corrosion resistance.
  • Methods include tank pickling (for short/dismountable pipes) or circular pickling (using pumps for long/installed pipes).
  • Typical pickling procedure for steel pipes: degreasing → water rinse → acid pickling → water rinse → neutralization.
  • For hydraulic lines, specialist equipment forms temporary circuits for acid circulation, speeding up cleaning even inside complex assemblies.

Passivation

Passivation chemically treats cleaned metal surfaces—particularly stainless steel—to enhance corrosion resistance:

  • Uses oxidizing acids (commonly nitric or citric acid) to remove residual iron and promote the formation of a uniform, protective chromium oxide layer.
  • The process: final cleaning → acid passivation → thorough rinse → hot air drying.
  • Results in:
    • Increased durability and corrosion resistance.
    • Restoration or enhancement of the passive layer critical for stainless steel systems.
    • Compliance with strict industry standards for pharmaceuticals, food processing, and environmental safety.

Typical Precommissioning Procedure

  1. Pipeline Inspection and Initial Cleaning: Remove gross debris, oil, and grease.
  2. Chemical Cleaning: Fill/circulate cleaning solutions to strip contaminants.
  3. Acid Pickling: Apply or circulate acid solution for oxide/scaling removal.
  4. Neutralization and Rinsing: Neutralize acids, then flush with high-purity water until pH and cleanliness standards are met.
  5. Passivation: Apply acid passivation solution; rinse and dry with filtered air.
  6. Visual Inspection and Certification: Inspect for scale, rust, and discoloration; re-treat if required. Issue test certificates for documentation.
